If you’re like many Business Analysts, you’re given a solution that you need to provide and then asked to get requirements to solve it. I’ve been handed many projects this way. What do you do? Who knows if the recommended solution is the best solution?
People
The answer lies in the business. There are key individuals that understand the problem. They might be sitting right across the hall, or across the pond. It’s your job to find them. Yes, your first job is to find people not the problem.
Think about the solution that you’ve been presented with as the crime scene. It somehow makes it more palatable for me. The solution got here somehow. Somebody went to a seminar, or read an article and suddenly the light went on. The problem that they were encountering met its solution. They were so excited to get it solved, that when they came to you it wasn’t with the problem, but with their brilliant solution.
How do you find the right people?
So how do you find these folks that can help understand the problem? One way to find the people is follow the data. Start with the solution presented to you. What data will benefit from it?

Many of you are familiar with these five levels of maturity from the Capability Maturity Model Integration®(CMMI®) or its predecessor CMM®. CMMI is a process improvement approach that provides organizations with the essential elements for improving their ability to successfully deliver projects that meet business needs. It can be used to guide process improvement across a project, a division, or an entire organization. CMMI helps integrate traditionally separate organizational functions, set process improvement goals and priorities, provide guidance for quality processes, and provide a point of reference for appraising current processes. For detailed information about CMMI go to www.sei.cmu.edu/cmmi. This article applies the proven model to the discipline of business analysis to show the different levels of maturity that organizations experience. The goal is not to create a prescriptive process mandated for every project, but rather to assemble and make available a useful business analysis toolkit for BAs to work more provide recommendations for how your organization can raise the maturity level of the business analysis process. Every organization falls within some level of maturity. Organizations should determine their current level and then plan an approach for reaching the next level. Determining the level of maturity is not an exact science, it is more of an ‘art’ or a subjective evaluation. To determine the current level of maturity you must first understand the definitions of the five levels.

On July 16th, 2008 the BA Collective announced the BA Collective Video Webcast Series. The series is a new resource and will provide another dimension to our business analysis articles by providing an additional format to receive information, education and news from the BA Collective. The Business Analysis Video Webcast Series was developed together by the BA Collective and Collective Genius.
The video webcasts will focus on current and past articles to provide a new format and learning resource for our Business Analysis Community. In developing the video webcasts, we hope to provide another free, educational resource for you, the BA. We believe this is the next step in the evolution of the BA Collective that will continue to push our community forward in our goal to create a gathering place for like-minded professionals dedicated to the practice of business analysis.
The first in the series video webcasts will introduce people to the BA Collective. In this video, we discuss the reason we created the BA Collective and our mission of both the BA Collective and Collective Genius, to bridge the gap between the need for professional and experienced Business Analysts and the projects that need them. We hope facilitating the BA Collective and additional resources like the BA Collective Webcast will accomplish this mission.
