Here's the Solution - Now Write the Requirements
Written by Jim Furey, CBAP

Business Analysis SolutionsIf you’re like many Business Analysts, you’re given a solution that you need to provide and then asked to get requirements to solve it. I’ve been handed many projects this way. What do you do? Who knows if the recommended solution is the best solution?

People
The answer lies in the business. There are key individuals that understand the problem. They might be sitting right across the hall, or across the pond. It’s your job to find them. Yes, your first job is to find people not the problem.

Think about the solution that you’ve been presented with as the crime scene. It somehow makes it more palatable for me. The solution got here somehow. Somebody went to a seminar, or read an article and suddenly the light went on. The problem that they were encountering met its solution. They were so excited to get it solved, that when they came to you it wasn’t with the problem, but with their brilliant solution.

How do you find the right people?
So how do you find these folks that can help understand the problem? One way to find the people is follow the data. Start with the solution presented to you. What data will benefit from it?

Journey to Business Analysis Maturity
Written by Angie Perris, BA Certified, CBAP and J. “Kupe” Kupersmith, BA Certified, CBAP

Business Analysis Maturity Many of you are familiar with these five levels of maturity from the Capability Maturity Model Integration®(CMMI®) or its predecessor CMM®. CMMI is a process improvement approach that provides organizations with the essential elements for improving their ability to successfully deliver projects that meet business needs. It can be used to guide process improvement across a project, a division, or an entire organization. CMMI helps integrate traditionally separate organizational functions, set process improvement goals and priorities, provide guidance for quality processes, and provide a point of reference for appraising current processes. For detailed information about CMMI go to www.sei.cmu.edu/cmmi. This article applies the proven model to the discipline of business analysis to show the different levels of maturity that organizations experience. The goal is not to create a prescriptive process mandated for every project, but rather to assemble and make available a useful business analysis toolkit for BAs to work more provide recommendations for how your organization can raise the maturity level of the business analysis process. Every organization falls within some level of maturity. Organizations should determine their current level and then plan an approach for reaching the next level. Determining the level of maturity is not an exact science, it is more of an ‘art’ or a subjective evaluation. To determine the current level of maturity you must first understand the definitions of the five levels.

Analytical Pitfalls in Cross-platform Initiatives Avoiding Another Troy: Part I
Written by Cameron Vincent

Business Analysis ArticlesIn Bulfinch’s Mythology he states that after nine years of military failures to take Troy, the Greek armies were despondent and “resolved to resort to stratagem.” I’ve been on that project! We as business analysts are like Odysseus, coming up with ideas to try to get behind that great walled city and celebrate victory. The project manager for the Trojan War was Agamemnon, focused on the goal of victory but without a sense of how to do it. Surrounding him were his project team: all the armies of Greece, a thousand ships worth, all with different voices and different agendas. We remember the Greek armies as victorious. We remember the Trojan Horse as the final bit of cunning that won the war. But as business analysts we cannot fight a war for nine years. Users, stakeholders, management don’t remember the result, only the amount of pain that it takes us to complete a project. When we have a huge undertaking like the conquest of Troy, special tools can be used to make our success more likely. In this piece, we will focus on three tools that we as Odysseus can use to make the project better. In Part II we will look at ways to help Agamemnon strategize.
